On November 13th, Great Basin College and Nevada Gold Mines partnered to host 41 students and staff members from Carlin, West Wendover, Owyhee, Jackpot, Elko, and Spring Creek for an inspiring "Women in CTE & Mining Rocks" experience. The event, held at the Carlin Complex, focused on highlighting the diverse Career and Technical Education pathways that drive Nevada’s mining industry.
During the visit, students received an immersive tour of several key facilities, including Mill 5, the Central Shop, and the Truck Shop. These stops provided a rare, behind-the-scenes look at gold processing in action and offered insight into how industrial maintenance teams keep complex equipment running. A particular highlight for many was visiting the Truck Shop, where they watched diesel technicians work on a massive new Komatsu 930 haul truck.

Beyond the technical demonstrations, the day centered on the people who make the industry thrive. Students had the unique opportunity to meet women leading the way in the mining sector, as well as recent graduates who have already transitioned from their studies into exciting careers in industrial technology. This face-to-face interaction allowed students to see firsthand how the skills they are learning can translate into a successful professional future.
This hands-on experience provided a comprehensive look at real-world career opportunities right here in Nevada. By connecting classroom learning with the large-scale operations of the Carlin Complex, the event successfully showcased the essential skills and hard work that power the state’s mining industry.
